LIMS Requirements Checklist

Published 2 min read

Quick verdict. Before you talk to any vendor, write down your compliance standards, deployment constraints, must-have modules, instrument and system integrations, and user count. Vendors answer these questions very differently, and having your own answers first keeps evaluation calls focused instead of open-ended.

A LIMS evaluation goes faster, and produces better vendor conversations, when you can answer these questions about your own lab before the first call. Use this as a working checklist, not a form to fill out perfectly.

Once you’ve answered these, our segment picks group vendors by the priorities that come up most often (pharmaceutical QC, small labs, cloud-first, testing labs), and the comparison tool lets you check up to four vendors against each other on the criteria above. For a deeper look at any single vendor, see the full LIMS vendor list.

FAQ

Should I write a full RFP before talking to any vendor?

Not necessarily. A shortlist call to check basic fit against this checklist is usually faster than a full RFP, and can help you narrow to 2-3 vendors worth a formal RFP. See our guide on how to run a LIMS RFP for when a formal process makes sense.

How many vendors should I evaluate?

Most labs get diminishing returns past 3-4 vendors. Use a checklist like this one to narrow a longer list quickly, then go deep with formal quotes and demos on a short list.
